Did some experimenting with wood hinges. Both have 5 fingers, one is 1/4”, the other is 3/8”. The narrower size looks better on the chest but I’m trying to decide between 5 – 1/4” fingers, or 3 – 3/8” fing...

My love for woodworking began in high school which had a well equipped industrial arts classroom and offered courses in architectural and mechanical drawing, woodworking and woodturning. After taking every course offered, I tried to repeat them but wasn't allowed. I did apartment woodworking for a number of years, building simple shelves, DVD racks, and step stools. After buying a house with a separate shop building I finally purchased a table saw and began making furniture for the house. These days I make whatever suits my fancy from shop layout tools, boxes, turned projects and more.

I found a stack of wood on the side of the road, a futon frame (I think) and some pine. A Viking chest (inspired by the Mastermyr chest) has been in the plans for awhile and since I tend to make most mistakes on my first one of anything, I decided...
There was a lot of interest in this part so I’m adding another blog entry. In the past I’ve used guitar string: burns nicely but abrades the line so it isn’t very dark; bailing wire: gets too hot and scorches the wood around t...
I always forget to take pictures so it goes from mounted on the lathe to nearly done. I knocked the corners off on the tablesaw. The bandsaw would have been my first choice but mine only has a carbon steel blade and ipe can damage carbon st...
The handle is 2 pieces of 4/4 maple about 2×12 inches. The head is 4 pieces of 4/4 reclaimed ipe about 2.5×7 inches. Getting the ipe flat without a jointer was trial and error. Hand planes dull after a few strokes and I didn’t w...
